Our newly expanded UKAS Testing FacilityHoused in a brand new two storey building within our Biggleswade operation, the expanded facility opened in Spring 2014 and has been appropriately named the Smiths Innovation Centre.
Considerable benefits to the customer emerge from this fresh initiative, which include meaningful reduction in eventual lead time to the end user. This is by combining metal stockholding, cutting , testing and delivery under one roof. Where applicable, this can also include Lloyds, TUV or other third party verification of metal. Also it includes test criteria and the issue of an EN 10204:2004 3.2 certificate, guaranteeing metal supply of the utmost quality, integrity and traceability.
Expansion in Approved Testing TechniquesWe have substantially increased our ability to offer wider range of testing techniques. The test facility is managed by Steve Dawson who has considerable, detailed experience of the specification requirements for metal supply into all major industry sectors. Keith Bendall BTech MICorr - Technical Consultant - advises the Test House from a perspective of 40 years of knowledge gained in metal production and supply to all industries worldwide. He has worked closely with NORSOK and other industry material specification bodies over many years having been involved earlier in his career with alloy development, such as super duplex stainless steel, for the Oil and Gas and other sectors and has presented papers at conferences around Europe and the USA.
In addition to our ability to test material to the most exacting of standards, the Smiths Innovation Centre uses its expertise to develop alloys that target a particular chemical composition, much tighter than that in national/international standards, to achieve a highly consistent product which can save customers time and reduce cost during component manufacture. For example, AMINOX AS-1, a 300 series stainless steel with optimised machining and weldability characteristics.
The material test facility also offers a service to outside industry such as welder approval evaluation and reporting.
